Gujarat was the first state to realize the importance of entrepreneurship. A need was felt for a national entrepreneurship development organization to promote to concept of entrepreneurship across the country and EDI was established in 1983 as a national resources organization in entrepreneurship education, research and training.

Entrepreneurship covers a wide spectrum from street vendors and vegetable sellers to multi-crore enterprises. One sees the spirit of entrepreneurship asserting itself over this wide spectrum. While it is difficult to cover the entire spectrum, EDI, as I understand, is focusing on specific segments such as small and medium enterprises as well as women entrepreneurs. This is particularly meaningful in the context of the emphasis on inclusive growth.
